Who We Are

Wind on the Wires, launched in 2001, is a collaborative organization. Our Board of Directors and members are comprised of wind developers, environmental organizations, wind energy experts, tribal representatives, clean energy advocates, and businesses providing goods and services to the wind industry. We are a key regional partner of the American Wind Energy Association, and work closely with them on wind power and transmission issues; www.awea.org.

What We Do

Our mission is simple: overcome the barriers to bring wind energy to market. This includes both better use of existing transmission and getting more transmission constructed, as well as a number of other public policy, siting and other issues. We focus on three primary areas:

  • Technical Issues – We work with utilities, the Midwest Independent System Operator (a regional transmission “grid” operator: www.midwestiso.org), and other stakeholders on comprehensive, integrated, forward-looking transmission planning. We also work with stakeholders to understand the operating impacts of integrating wind into the electrical power system.
  • Regulatory Issues – We regularly intervene in state Certificate of Need proceedings for new transmission lines to support wind and participate in a number of other regulatory matters.
  • Education and Outreach – Our staff and consultants provide education on technical and regulatory issues to a wide variety of stakeholders, from farmer/landowners to developers to governors’ offices and a wide range of others.

Connecting the Midwest

Our footprint includes the nine states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri,
North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
